Monthly Expense for Dog care.
By Puneet Bangera
This article is specifically for people who are planning to get a pet home but still cannot make up their mind. People generally come up to me and ask what would be the monthly expense for Puppy they are planning to get home. Well it’s difficult to answer that because it is a very tricky question.
I simply start the answer with “it depends”. Honestly it depends on how much you want to spend on your pet or rather how much you can afford to spend. Some affluent pet owners spend over a lakh of Rupees (i.e. around $ 2500-$ 3000) while some modest owners would take good care by spending just around Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000 (i.e. $ 50 to $100).
To understand this better lets bifurcate the cost as essentials and luxury. Under essentials we can include food, toiletries, vaccinations, medication (if needed.) etc. and under luxury there would be the deodorants, grooming at salons, professional trainers etc.
Let us discuss the essentials first. An adult dog has to be fed twice a day. You can either feed him Pet food like Pedigree, NutriPet or Royal Canin or simple home food like rice with curd or rice with eggs. The Pet food can range from Rs.100/Kg to Rs.500/Kg. A pet needs around 150 to 400 gms of food in a day depending on the dog breed. The puppies need to be vaccinated periodically as recommended by the vet. The vaccination can cost you anywhere from Rs.300 to Rs.1000 per shot. The other cost involved is of grooming products which include shampoos, Grooming Brush etc. I guess I have covered all the major cost that you have to incur once you get the pet home. There are other small expenses which comprise of the treats that you need to feed them and also some accessories.
When it comes to luxury products there is a wide range of products available which cannot be discussed in this article. You have a gamut of products starting from a diamond studded collar to fancy accessories to pet spas which your pet would never need. So as I said before it’s a matter of how much you can afford to spend. If you have the money there are thousands of options where you can spend it.
Personally I feel all that matters to the pet is your love and care so rather than thinking about how much money you would need to spend you need to think how much time you can spend with your pet. Believe me getting a pet home is a great experience and it is worth every single penny you spend.
