What do you look for when buying a dog?

So you’ve decided that you’re finally going to cave in to your kids’ puppy eyed looks and constant nagging. You’re going to buy a dog. And like the true dog-lover you are, you set out to find the perfect puppy, confident that you’ll find just the right one to bring smiles to your kids’ faces.

But then you realise you don’t really know what to look for in a dog. What should you know when setting out to buy one?

Keep a few simple things in mind, and you should be fine.

Make sure you know the background of the breed you decide upon. If you are looking for a dog to protect you and your family, be sure that the dog will not attack your family when older. Some dogs may seem angelic when puppies, but could turn into devils when older. Also, make sure that the dog you buy does not come from a breed that is known for physical ailments.

Check that the dog you’re buying is healthy. Puppies are generally very sleepy, but if they’re awake, they’re usually quite the opposite. They like to play. They like to respond to attention. If a puppy does not show enthusiasm, it may be ill. The same can be said of a grown dog. If it doesn’t respond to attention, something may well be wrong with it.

If the puppy’s stomach is swollen, it may be a sign of some sort of ailment. Another sign of it possibly being sick is if it throws up a lot, or if it suffers from diarrhoea. Check that these symptoms are not present before buying.

If there’s a mucus-like substance around the nose and eyes of the dog you’re buying, it could also be a sign of something being wrong with it.

Do some simple checks to see that the dog can hear and see. Call the puppy towards you, and see if it responds. Although puppies generally do not respond as well as older dogs, there should still be some sort of acknowledgement.

Check that the dog you’re buying has been de-wormed. This should happen at six weeks. If all the necessary inoculations have not been administered, it means that you’ll have to fork out cash to do it. This is unnecessary.

Be sure that you have the right environment set up for the dog, before bringing it home. Do you have a kennel for it? Do you have water and food bowls? Do you have a walking lead and collar? Do you have toys for it to play with?

If you’ve found the puppy that you think is right for you, the first thing you need to do is take it to the vet for a check-up. Once this is done, and the vet is happy, you can take the new addition to the family home, and watch the smiles appear.
